USM, as we know it today, was established in the 1960’s by Paul Schärer Jr and Fritz Haller on a vision of future flexibility and innovation, designed to evolve with a rapidly developing business. In 2024 we are seeing rapid development across all aspects of our day to day lives, in everything from climate impact, to social impact, the economy, Artificial Intelligence and beyond.
At this critical juncture for change, the innovation needed to deliver positive impact is within the origin of the Fondation USM Futures LAB, and aims to utilise this unique point of difference to the benefit of people and planet.
Our Purpose
Foster Understanding
We seek to deepen our understanding of the multifaceted paths that the future may take, providing valuable insights into emerging trends, technologies, and potential scenarios.
Promote Modularity
We embrace modularity as a fundamental principle in our work, acknowledging that the future is not a linear path but an intricate web of interconnected possibilities. Our approach allows us to dissect complex scenarios, break them into manageable components, and explore their interplay.
Create a Positive Impact
We are dedicated to identifying and promoting future trajectories that maximise human well-being, environmental harmony, and societal progress.
Adopt Flexible Thinking
We recognise that the future is dynamic and ever-changing. Our commitment to flexibility allows us to adapt our strategies, research, and recommendations in response to evolving circumstances, challenges, and opportunities.
Deliver on Sustainability
Environmental and social sustainability are at the core of our mission. Set within the framework of the UN SDG’s, we strive to envision futures that preserve and enhance the well-being of current and future generations while safeguarding the planet's ecological balance.
Our Principles
Inclusivity
We promote diversity of thought and perspective in our work, fostering collaboration and dialogue among individuals from various backgrounds and experiences.
